South Africa | Coastal Region | Black Fruits, Earthy, Medium Bodied | Syrah |
Created in 1994, a young pup by wine standards, it is not to be underestimated. Named after South Africa’s most iconic bay, which frames much of the country’s premium winelands, False Bay Vineyards was born out of a desire to make ‘real’ wine affordable. 'Old School' Syrah is not a jam soup, with toasted oak chips added for mocha flavour. The wine is fermented ‘old-school’ with wild yeast (partially whole-bunch) and raised in large wooden casks (or ‘foudre’ en Francais). An homage to the savoury, wild yet elegant renditions from Paul Boutinot’s ancestral lands. Wild yeast fermentation, low yields and ageing in large French oak foudre are what defines this savoury and appealing Syrah. Full yet elegant with bramble fruits and also some earth and meaty aromas. The palate is structured and elegant with fine tannins and a refreshing natural acidity.
